Teacher Gift- Gift Card Flower

It is that time of year- school is ending for the summer and the kids are all saying good-bye to their teachers. And with that comes the inevitable what the heck do I get my kids' teacher to show her how much we appreciate what she has done all year.

This was my son's last year of pre-school so I wanted to get something for all of the teachers at his school- I decided on a Dunkin Donuts gift card but just giving a gift card seemed so boring to this crafty mom. That is was spawned the idea of a gift card flower.

The only supplies I needed were a flower pot, a foam block, two pencils, craft paint, card stock, ribbon shredded paper "grass" and a hot glue gun. For all of the supplies I spent less than $5- the ribbon was the most expensive thing but you could even use fabric cut into strips or magazine pages, newspaper pages or paper cut into strips.

I had my son paint the pot with my craft paint. While it was drying I worked on the flower part. I traced the gift card envelope onto a piece of black card stock and cut it out. Then I cut the ribbon into strips, making sure that they were long enough to fold over. I glued one end of the ribbon onto the card stock and then folded it in half and glued to other end down. I repeated this, alternating between the black and red ribbon. Once done I glued down the gift card envelope. Then I glued the flower to a pencil and took some extra ribbon, made some "leaves" and glued those to the pencil. To make the sign I cut out a piece of white card stock with nifty craft scissors and glued it to another pencil. Once the flower pot was dry I shoved the foam block into it and then stuck the flower and sign in. I put the shredded grass on top to make it look like the flower was planted in dirt.

I also included a thank you note telling the teachers and staff how much we appreciate all that they have done for the past two years.

So there it is, a boring gift (a gift card) made into something thoughtful and pretty.

Valentine's Day Cards- My Kids Are No Fun

Thanks to Pinterest I found a cute idea for Valentines Day cards for my son to hand out at nursery school. His school does not let you bring in candy so I guess crayons it is. Even better, for their Valentine's Day party I am bringing in string cheese- they had a sign up list with that, strawberries and napkins on it. What, no stinking cupcakes? What kind of party doesn't have stinking cupcakes!!

Anyways... My kids were into making the heart crayons for about five minutes which left me sitting there peeling all of the stupid paper off all by myself. Isn't it annoying when you think your kids are really going to enjoy an activity and they end up not caring whatsoever about it?

Oh well, I think they are cute. I love making stuff like this- I will literally cry the day that my son decides he would rather use store bought cards.

Decorating Pumpkins...

The other day it was pouring rain out so I decided to let the kids decorate their pumpkins. My kids love paint and I hate carving pumpkins so we were all happy.

This is my daughter and her princess pumpkin- I don't really see how this looks like a princess in any way but she seems happy.

My son made a Star Wars monster pumpkin. He was happy because I let him use my craft paint. His sister used the Crayola paint because she still thinks eating non-food items is great.

We haven't put the pumpkins outside on display yet as the weather has been rainy and it even snowed a bunch last night. Tomorrow I will put them out on the front steps to show off the work of my two little artists.

Art and Crafts Time On the Cheap...

We go through a lot of cereal in this house, particularly Rice Krispies and Cheerios. I used to just throw the box in the recycle bin but then I had an idea- why not use it for arts and crafts time just like I do with empty toilet paper rolls?

A few cuts later and now my kids have some cardboard to color, glue, paint and whatever else they can come up with. Isn't it funny how cereal boxes and toilet paper tubes can bring out such creativity in kids?

Art and Craft Time...

What do you do with the kids when you are tired and are sick of hearing constant bickering?

Arts and crafts time!

My son is having fun cutting out pictures from magazines. Who knew a cheap pair of safety scissors and some old magazines could be so much fun?

My daughter is coloring with markers and crayons. Thank God they the markers are washable and non-toxic because she decided to color her arms and her tongue with them.

Now to just make this wonderful peace and quiet last until nap time...
