Today we took a family trip to BJ's to get a few things.
After loading up our cart with Starbucks Frappuccinos, dog food, Hoodsie Cups (my husband can be such a little kid sometimes) and ketsup we headed to the self checkout.
I scanned in my coupons and the Starbucks one beeped- weird, but the attendant put it in for me. The checker at the door looked over my receipt and my cart and we were on our way home.
Sounds great but on our way home I realized that I didn't pay for the Starbucks- I forgot to scan it! I really felt awful and had that feeling in the pit of my stomach because I basically shoplifted.
When we got home I called the store to let them know what happened, apologize for my stupidity and asked if I could come in either Monday or Tuesday to pay for the item that I forgot to scan. The associate who I was speaking too seemed very shocked and said that I could pay for the item if I wanted to. She kept telling me that she couldn't believe how honest I was.
This reaction really bothers me because are there really people who would forget to pay for something and then decide to not go back and do the right thing?
I want to raise my children to be good and moral people so to do this I must be a good role model to them. I have already told my three year old son that mommy forgot to pay for daddy's frappuccinos and that we have to go back to the store to buy them. He is learning that being honest is very important even if it seems like you can come out ahead by being dishonest. I want my kids to get that feeling in the pit of their stomach when they do something wrong.
My son is also learning that his mommy is a scatterbrain because last week at CVS I forgot to pay for a gallon of Nursery Water and we had to go back in the store. If I am already losing my mind at the ripe old age of 27, what am I going to be like when I'm 60?
Thank you for being so honest! I had my first "shoplifting experience" last week while at Target. My husband and I were picking up some essentials and stopped by the dollar bins before getting the other items on our list. We grabbed some animal flash cards for my 18 month old and threw them in the basket.
ReplyDeleteWell... when we got to the car we noticed that the flash cards were hidden by my diaper bag and weren't scanned! My husband quickly ran into the store to pay and was also given a questionable look by the cashier as to why he was coming back in...
