Trader Joe's Cereal (and wine) Stock Up

We had a catastrophe in my house yesterday- we ran out of my kids favorite cereal. My kids used to love Rice Krispies but I did not like the ingredients so I was delighted when I found out the Trader Joe's had their own version that was made with better ingredients. I was also delighted to find out that Trader Joe's has white whole wheat flour for $2.99 for a 5 lb bag- way better than the $4 or more I was spending on other brands.

And as you can see, I treated myself with some cheap organic wine. The kids get cereal and I get wine- sounds like a good deal to me  : )

Whole Foods- Whole Lotta Money

This was my first trip of the summer to the grocery doter with all three kids. It actually went very well and the kids for the most part behaved- and I didn't even have to bribe them with candy!

I spent a ton of money on this trip but we were completely out of meat and I plan on not having to go to the store again for awhile, except to get produce and milk. I am really thinking that I am going to set my grocery budget as $300 every two weeks- for the kind of foods I want to buy and the fact that I just do not have the time to go to multiple stores every week I think that amount seems right.

Produce and Soda at Shaw's

I made a quick produce run to Shaw's on my way to pick up my kids from my mom's house after I got out of work. I am a little annoyed because while this store did have a large assortment of organic produce, it was all gross looking. I would rather buy conventional produce that is fresh than old, barely edible organic produce.

Mini Watermelon $4.49
Romaine Lettuce $2.50
Campari Tomatoes $2.99 - .25 Checkout 51 rebate

I thought we were having my daughter's birthday party this weekend which is why you see the junky stuff. But, tonight it was decided the party won't be until next weekend so I guess I have one more week to procrastinate about all the stuff I need to do for the party. Since the hot dog and hamburger buns will go bad before next weekend guess what will be on the menu plan  : )

I am very excited about the deal I got on the ice cream cake though. It is a little tradition in our house that the kids get an ice cream cake on their actual birthday but man, those things are expensive! This cake was regularly $16.99 but was on sale for $9.99 plus I had a $2 coupon making it only $7.99. What is really great is that this cake only have vanilla ice cream in it (with sprinkles mixed in) which made my daughter so happy because vanilla is her favorite. Win for cheapo mom.

Small Grocery Trip...

I made a quick trip to a local grocery store here in Rhode Island, Dave's Marketplace. They don't offer much in the way of organic produce at the one near me but I was happy to see that they are expanding their selection of antibiotic free meat. I was a little disappointed that they only carry ultra-pasterized milk (which I refuse to buy because I personally feel ultra-pasterizing kills more good stuff in the milk than regular pasteurizing) so I bought what I felt was the next best thing- local milk.

Stop and Shop Shopping Trip

I normally do my grocery shopping on Tuesdays or Thursdays and have to take my two youngest kids with me but today I decided that it would be nice to go shopping alone. I forgot how busy grocery stores are on weekends though- totally not fun dealing with the crowds and rude shoppers.

I normally hate shopping at Stop and Shop because their organic produce is terrible and they always run out of things I need, but I didn't have time to drive all the way to Whole Foods so I made due. I bought some things that I hated buying but you gotta do what you gotta do and it is not worth stressing out about sometimes not being able to buy what I like.

2 lbs Strawberries $3.49
Mini Watermelon $3.99
2.41 lb Grapes $7.21
Mushrooms .99
4 Kiwi @ .50 each
Lemon .59
Grape Tomatoes .99 w/ in ad coupon - .25 Checkout 51 rebate = .74
2 Bags Baby Carrots @ .99 each (for my daughter's preschool graduation party)

Scott Toilet Paper $9.99 w/ in ad coupon - $1 MC = $8.99
Hebrew National Beef Hot Dogs $3.50 (they did not have Applegate or any other nitrate free brands)
2.9 lbs Pork Chops $10.12 (I normally only buy antibiotic free but they didn't have any)
Stop and Shop Frozen Apple Juice Concentrate $1.59 (to make homemade Jello)

Monday Grocery Shopping

Today was my first day doing my shopping during the week. My four year old was at my mom's for a sleepover so thankfully I just had my two year old with me- next week I'll have both of them and I am slightly dreading it.

Whole Foods

3 lb Bag Tangerines $3.99
Iceberg Lettuce $2.29
(2) Organic 1/2 Gallon Milk @ $4.39 each (local- from Maine)
So Delicious Ice Cream Bars $4.99 - $1 MC - $1 Whole Deal Coupon - $1 Ibotta = $1.99
Feel Good Foods Egg Rolls $4.99 (gluten and dairy free- so excited to eat them!!!!)
365 Frozen Corn $2.49 (certified gmo free)
Earth Balance Organic Buttery Spread $4.29 (dairy free)
(2) 365 Cage Free Eggs @ $2.99 each
365 Tortilla Chips $2.79 (certified gmo free)
365 Veggie Puff Chips $1.99 (certified gmo free)
Natures's Path Organic Corn Puffs $2.19
2.26 lb London Broil $11.28
2.13 lb Bone In Pork Chops $10.63
2.85 lb Beef Brisket $19.92

Less $30 rebate card (got from an Energy Star rebate on our refrigerator that we bought over the summer)

Total: $53.60 after Ibotta rebate

I know your eyes are probably popping out of your head about how much I spent on the beef brisket considering mainstream brisket is less than $2 a pound, but it is antibiotic and nitrate free which is very important to me. I will not buy any meat that contains those things because they are not good for my family to eat- I would rather not buy meat at all then buy meat filled with questionable ingredients. Plus, I loath factory farmed meat.

Stop and Shop

5 lb Bag Potatoes $3.99
3 lb Bag Onions $3.49 - $3.49 (free when you buy potatoes)
1 lb Organic Carrots .99
1.93 lb Cabbage .56
Stop and Shop Pure Cane Sugar $2.00 (gmo free)
Morton Kosher Salt $3.19
5 Alexia Fries @ $3 each - $5 Instant Savings - $1.50 Catalina = $1.70 each
(2) American Flatbread Pizza @ $5.99 each - (2) $1 MC = $4.99 each
Clif Kids Z-Bars $3.00

Less $3 off $30 home mailer coupon

Total: $28.21

I had another $1 Alexia coupon that I got in a home mailer but for some reason it got deleted from my order- oh well, you win some and you lose some.

As you can see, I am trying to stock my freezer with easy, husband friendly foods that can be made when I am at work on Saturdays- if I don't do this then the kids end up eating fast food.

2 lbs Grass Fed Ground Beef @ $7.99 BOGO = $4/lb

Less $2 gift card won from Monopoly Game

Total: $35.22

I spent a lot today. I did it because I feel like I haven't been grocery shopping in forever and I felt like our fridge was empty and our pantry was getting low. Plus, because I will be working on Saturdays I wanted to get my husband some quick things he could make for himself and the the kids when I am gone- if I don't provide these things then he will not think twice about getting fast food or ordering take out. I guess the extra I am spending now will end up saving money in the long run.

Tomorrow I plan on running to our local grocery store chain to pick up some produce- they have great prices and the quality of the produce is awesome. My son will be at school and my four year old is at my in-laws so it will be just my two year old and I.

Tomorrow I also plan on having a freezer cooking session- I plan on making a big batch of chili, eggplant "meat" balls and possibly a batch of waffles. We shall see if this happens as my back has been killing me lately- I am thinking it is from me going back to work and sitting at a computer for hours each day. Normally I am always up and about doing things so I guess my body needs to adjust; hopefully it is soon because sleeping with a heating pad every night is no fun.

Amazon: Money and Sanity Saver

A way that I save myself time and money is by shopping at Amazon. I love that I can get really good prices on things that we use and really love that it all gets delivered to my door for free.

While we are Amazon Prime members, you don't need to be one to get free delivery on things. All of the items above were bought utilizing Amazon's Subscribe and Save program. Basically, certain items they sell have the option for you to set up automatic deliveries on a date of your choice. By doing so, you get free shipping and 5% off. To make it even better though, if you subscribe to five or more items in a month, you get 15% off! If you are an Amazon Mom member (I believe you have to be a Prime member to sign up) then you get 20% off!

Here is a breakdown of my most recent Subscribe and Save delivery:

2 Seventh Generation Facial Wipes @ $1.67 each (I cut these into 1/4's to get the most for my $)
3 Seventh Generation Body Wash $7.19
2 Clif Bars @ $2.55 each
36 Rolls Scott Toilet Paper $13.18
60 Loads Dropps Baby Detergent $6.83
80 Loads Dropps Detergent $9.98
Magic Erasers $2.28

I had free gift cards that I earned from Swagbucks and taking surveys so I only ended up paying $17.13 out of pocket.

Shopping this way is especially good if you are into buying more natural products for your home as it can be hard to find deals on those at local stores.

So go ahead- check out Amazon to see if you can save yourself some money (and time) too!

I am super annoyed at the Triscuits- I didn't look at the ingredients because I assumed they were okay but they contain soybean oil, which is a gmo crop. I would have never bought them if I took two seconds to read the box, but since I have them I guess the kids will eat them.

Target- Free K-Cups and Cheap Peroxide

I made a special trip to target to stock up on the 5 for $11 soda and of course they were all out of Cherry Coke, which is my husband's favorite. I ended up getting him one 12 pack of regular Coke and will have to make another trip later in the week to get Cherry Coke.

My youngest had some money she got from my mom on Valentine's day so she treated herself and my 4 year old to Lunchables and candy which was very nice of her considering that my 4 year old lost her own money.

Extra Gum $2.29 - .50 Target Coupon = $1.79
2 Market Pantry Candy @ $1 each - 5% Cartwheel = .95 each (not shown)
2 Lunchables @ $1.25 each - 10% Cartwheel = $1.12 each

Saturday Shopping- Tight Budget

I'm back to posting my shopping trips.

This week was a really hard one- my budget is super tight and I was seriously contemplating buying meat with antibiotics in it because it was cheaper, but then I just couldn't do it. That is one of my set in stone food rules and so far I've been able to make it work, though if I have to cut my budget back anymore I may sadly have to give into the lower prices. I am just going to have to double down on my menu planning and really start sticking to what we *need* at the store and forgo the impulse buys (I have been getting better at that).

My husband gets paid every two weeks so I have decided to set a $225 budget per pay period for just food. As for household and health and beauty items I am not sure what to do about that yet. I buy most of those things from Amazon and have set a $40/month budget for that so maybe I'll just include the random things I buy at the store in the $40.

Stop and Shop- Great Deal on Organic Chicken!

6.27 lb Organic Chicken $17.50 ($2.79/lb- what a steal!)
Stop and Shop Whole Milk $3.99 - .50 cash back from Ibotta
Stop and Shop Pure Cane Sugar $2.99 (gmo free because it's pure cane)
Clif Granola Bars $2.99 (gmo free, I got these for a work snack)

Total: $26.97

I am floored by how cheap the organic chicken is at Stop and Shop! At Whole Foods a whole organic chicken is around $3.99 a pound so this is really a deal, especially considering that $2.79/lb is the regular price. Plus, I love that the chicken comes cut up. Each package contains two split breast (bone in) and four legs which works perfectly for my family because my two older kids love chicken legs and would always get upset that whole chickens only had two. Tonight at dinner they thought I was the most awesome mom in the world  : )
